America’s Finest #1: DEVO

With the birthday of America approaching, I’d like to do a short series of posts giving a humble thanks to the U.S. Growing up in a very scant 90’s Ireland, we looked to the United States for everything; fashion, movies, etc. I consider myself quasi-american purely because I’m every bit enthralled by American tastes, cultures and influences as I am by my own Irish heritage.

My own username was the brainchild of Bill Murray, making a crack about his Irish roots.

First up is the American band Devo. Criminally ignored by the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, they are a band that formed before electro-pop or new wave were the established fads and they have been pioneering their own brand of eclectic electronic post-punk for over three decades now. Here’s one of my favourites from them. Notice the excellent use of potato at the beginning…

If you haven’t already had the pleasure, I’d strongly recommend taking a listen to the “Are we Not Men?” album. It’s a constant source of inspiration for me and all my manic bullsh*t…

Thank you America.
