America’s Finest #1: DEVO

With the birthday of America approaching, I’d like to do a short series of posts giving a humble thanks to the U.S. Growing up in a very scant 90’s Ireland, we looked to the United States for everything; fashion, movies, etc. I consider myself quasi-american purely because I’m every bit enthralled by American tastes, cultures and influences as I am by my own Irish heritage.

My own username was the brainchild of Bill Murray, making a crack about his Irish roots.

First up is the American band Devo. Criminally ignored by the Rock ‘n Roll Hall of Fame, they are a band that formed before electro-pop or new wave were the established fads and they have been pioneering their own brand of eclectic electronic post-punk for over three decades now. Here’s one of my favourites from them. Notice the excellent use of potato at the beginning…

If you haven’t already had the pleasure, I’d strongly recommend taking a listen to the “Are we Not Men?” album. It’s a constant source of inspiration for me and all my manic bullsh*t…

Thank you America.

Here’s a great fan made video for one of Devos newer songs, No Place Like Home. This song hits the shriveled up spot where I keep my very last feels… 🙁

One of the things that shaped me the most back in my LSD days (or was it years?) was the Devo movie. We would get super dosed and watch that, The Residents movie/videos, and a video by The Orb called patterns and textures. And Devo are also one of those bands that has somehow managed to be included in some fairly major events without really selling out. Their latest album is for sure more refined, but has the same style and lack of mainstream acceptance as their first. Truly a great band! This was and always will be one of my favorite songs by them…..

Yeah, I’m only five hours ahead.
By my math, you’re probably peeling out of bed same time as myself (8am or so).

  • Bulgingsnake

Yeah, I head it in my head we were like 10 hours apart.

  • PQG 1991

    Cool potatoes… I mean video.

  • UilickMcGee

Ten to one my time. That’s not a bad time difference at all. Much better than West Coast.

  • Bulgingsnake

It’s 7:50pm here in Sarasota Florida right now.

  • UilickMcGee

I know them from Malcolm in the Middle.

Have you heard the band THEY MIGHT BE GIANTS?
