Now that we have the sequel trilogy the prequels seem like a distant memory, but whether you love them or hate them its still not really been that long since the films debuted. On this day in 2002 Attack of the Clones made its official debut in theaters. Its often considered to be in contention with The Phantom Menace and currently The Last Jedi too for the weakest Star Wars film among fans.

Its been quite a few years since I’ve seen Attack of the Clones. It was when I marathoned all the existing Star Wars films with a friend who had not seen them in the summer before The Force Awakens came out. I don’t hate the film, and I don’t hate The Phantom Menace either, but I don’t go back to them as much as the other films in the saga. I think the man consensus is that Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman don’t deserve the blame they got when the film came out. The love story is definitely lacking and the dialogue in those moments stick out like a sore thumb, but there are some redeeming moments. The dialogue should be a problem in more scenes, but guys like Ewan McGregor, Ian McDiarmid and Christopher Lee are able to elevate it. It takes a while to really get underway too (I believe it was the longest Star Wars film before The Last Jedi)

The action sequences still hold up fairly well. I enjoy watching Obi-Wan squaring off with Jango Fett and that large scale Jedi battle is really impressive. While Yoda’s fight with Count Dooku may have been a bit of a disappointment that short moment of watching Yoda taking out his lightsaber to prepare for the fight still brings me chills.

How do you view Attack of the Clones now? How long has it been since you watched it?
