Jake Gyllenhaal to Play Mysterio in MCU’S Spider-Man 2

Jake Gyllenhaal is about to make his first dip into comic book movies by playing the villain in the next Spider-Man movie in the MCU. Gyllenhaal has established himself as one of the strongest actors in the world over the last decade with several top tier performances under his belt. He’s given us a lot of variety so far and he’s still pretty young. My favorite Gyllenhaal performances would include Nightcrawler, Prisoners and Brokeback Mountain.

Gyllenhaal will play Mysterio, a villain that has yet to be seen on film even though he’s one of Spider-Man’s oldest foes. In his debut Quentin Beck AKA Mysterio was a special effects man and stuntman in Hollywood who failed to become an actor and decided to use his illusions to commit crimes. His first appearance was in 1964 during the original Stan Lee run of comics.

Mysterio was believed to be coming in the purposed Spider-Man 4 that Sam Raimi was working on and would be played by cult actor Bruce Campbell, who had appeared in all 3 of the films before it, but Raimi decided to leave the project and Sony chose to reboot the character.

Spider-Man: Homecoming was the first Spider-Man movie to take place in the MCU and most of the key players behind the scenes will return for the sequel including the director and screenwriters. Michael Keaton is also expected to return as Vulture for the second film.

Gyllenhaal has had an interesting relationship with the Spider-Man character. He was considered for the role all the way back in the early 2000s. The original screen Spider-Man Tobey Maguire injured his back while working on Seabuscuit  in between Spider-Man 1 and 2. He was briefly considered as a replacement. Although Maguire was able to return.

This may also but some rumors about Gyllenhaal replacing Ben Affleck’s Batman in the DCEU to bed.

What do you think of Jake Gyllenhaal playing Mysterio in Spider-Man 2 (2)?
