Another Robocop Movie Coming From Neill Blomkamp

The 1987 film Robocop is one of the more beloved films of its era, but the films that followed it weren’t viewed as highly. Peter Weller played the titular character for the first two films and then decided not to return for the third movie so he was replaced by Robert John Burke. Then the franchise was rebooted in 2014 with Joel Kinnaman. Apparently Michael Keaton, Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson were in the movie as well, but I honestly don’t remember the film at all.

Now MGM has decided to go back to the well and has announced a new Robocop film called Robocop Returns. This will serve as a sequel to the original film and not as another remake. District 9 director Neill Blomkamp has been tapped to direct the movie. Justin Rhodes is writing the script. Rhodes also wrote the script for the sixth Terminator movie that is currently shooting.

There is no word on who will be playing Robocop, but I assume that it’ll be a new actor. It’d be cool to see Peter Weller back, but that’s not likely considering he’s 71 years old now. I’m interested to see if this sequel will follow the trend of some other sequels and retcon earlier movies like Terminator 6 and the new Halloween have done.

I actually think that Blomkamp is a pretty good choice for a project like this and I don’t even like all his movies. Elysium wasn’t very good and I didn’t care for Chappie either, but he seems well suited for a project like this. Blomkamp was attached to an Alien sequel for years until Ridley Scott decided to do sequels to Prometheus and wouldn’t allow work on a sequel until after his prequels were done. Eventually I think Blomkamp got tired of waiting and scrapped the idea.

Are you cool with another Robocop movie?
