Robert De Niro in Talks to Join Joker Movie

There has been a lot of talk about a Joker movie in the news in the past few weeks. The project has been pitched as a film that will take place outside Warner Brother’s poorly received DC Extended Universe and will feature Joaquin Phoenix as the Joker. The film is expected to have a moderate budget rather than a huge comic book movie budget and I wouldn’t be shocked if the film is planned to be rated R. Now it looks like Robert De Niro is in the mix.

De Niro is in talks to play a character that is only described as a “talk show host” who will impact the origin of the Joker in some form or fashion. The movie is also said to be taking place in the 1980s, which is unexpected. The film is set to be directed by director Todd Phillips (The Hangover).

This is De Niro’s first attempt to play a character in a comic book movie. While his efforts in the movies for the last decade or more are often hit or miss he’s still considered one of the best actors of all time. He’s won two Oscars over 7 nominations. The most recent being Silver Linings Playbook.

At first I was shocked that this movie is happening since we’ve already seen Jared Leto play the Joker in the DCEU, but it looks like production is happening very soon and the film will be released next year. A much lower budget could mean a much bigger profit and with talent like Phoenix and De Niro involved people will be interested.
