Episode IX Casting Announcement… Carrie Fisher to Return

The official casting announcement for Episode IX has hit the web thanks to the Star Wars website. It came with a few surprises and a few new additions.

Returning to the cast is Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Domhall Gleason, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo and Billie Lourd. Billy Dee Williams is officially returning as Lando Calrissian. There is no effort made to hide a potential Luke Skywalker appearance as Mark Hamill was announced as well. John Williams will complete the score for the whole trilogy.

The most surprising news is that Princess Leia will be played by ….. Carrie Fisher. Thanks to some archive footage of Carrie leftover from The Force Awakens Leia will make an appearance. JJ Abrams discussed the decision in the article saying that there was never any talk of recasting or using a CGI version. The production got the approval of Billie Lourd and Carrie will appear although her arc will obviously be limited by the footage that was shot.

There are also some new cast members that have been added although there is no word on the reported casting of Keri Russell. It could be possible that talks have just fallen apart or her role in the film was intended to be a secret. Richard E. Grant (Logan) and Naomi Ackie (Lady McBeth) are the two new castings.

Are you surprised by any of the castings in Episode IX? The filming is set for next week.
