I’ve Decided I’m Not a Grand Admiral Thrawn Fan

I finished Timothy Zahn’s new book Thrawn: Alliances last night. Its his second book since he returned to Star Wars canon last year with Thrawn’s origin story. I’m sure there will be at least one more book to round out a bit of a trilogy, if not they’ll likely be more. However, while other fans seem to really dig these books I find myself to be constantly on the fence about them. Neither of them are among my favorites. There were some points where I actually found them hard to get through. I’ve read original Thrawn Trilogy and I enjoyed it all quite a bit, including Thrawn. Maybe it was because he had to share the spotlight with a lot of other great characters, but I just can’t seem to get on board with Thrawn as the lead character in a story.

I’ve identified that my problems with these book are my own opinion and almost everyone else who reads it seems to enjoy it. Thrawn is essentially the Star Wars equivalent of Sherlock Holmes. He does a lot of investigating and doesn’t really get involved in too much action. At least in Alliances he was paired with Darth Vader so he did a bit of slicing and dicing while Thrawn did all the thinking. I think its just that Thrawn’s constant speculation is just something that I personally find boring.

There are definitely things that I like about Thrawn. He is somebody who isn’t really evil. He’s not nearly as vicious as some of the other key players in the Empire. The Chiss species has definitely an interesting mythology and Alliances only added to that. He also seems to be the character that is going to give us some insight into the Unknown Regions of the galaxy, which is where Snoke likely came from. Who knows? It could be possible that we see a war between the Chiss and some other group of beings in a Star Wars film. It would give Lucasfilm a chance to explore some different characters. Even if they never wind up on screen I am interested to see how they develop the Chiss.

There is always a lot of speculation about a time when we may finally see Thrawn on screen. I never got to the point of Rebels where Thrawn became a part of the story and I don’t know if I’ll ever watch those episodes. Personally, I don’t really care if we ever see a live action Thrawn. I’ve basically just accepted the fact that I’m just not that big of a fan of the character.
