Adam Sandler’s new standup special 100% Fresh landed on Netflix a week or two ago and ever since I’ve had friends come up to me and say “did you watch the Sandler special on Netflix? Its ACTUALLY pretty good.” So after hearing that multiple I decided last night that I’d watch it, when it I finished it I though “wow, this is ACTUALLY pretty good”.
I’m from a bit of a weird generation, I’m a little too young to be aware of the stuff Sandler did before the mid 90s when he started making movies. I didn’t fuck with SNL much and I had no idea what his standup was like. He mostly just goes up on stage with a guitar and a guy with a piano and sings these little songs that generally go on for about 30 seconds to a minute and most of them end in a pretty funny joke. They’re pretty simple, but its relatable.
Most people are quick to dismiss anything Adam Sandler does now, and probably for good reason. Most of the films he makes are pretty lazy and I’m sure he called his special 100% Fresh because of how Rotten Tomatoes basically has a field day with most of his films whenever they’re released. This special actually reminded me what I used to love about him back in The Wedding Singer and Big Daddy days in the late 90s and early 2000s. The last 10 minutes of the special are surprisingly heartfelt too.
If you’ve got a Netflix subscription I suggest checking it out. What is your favorite Adam Sandler project?
