Country Music That Doesn’t Suck: Shooter Jennings

Hopefully my bro OneMatGang will be cool with this, but I thought I’d borrow one of his segments for the day because I happened to make a cool discovery yesterday. I checked out an album by Waylon Jennings’ son Shooter that was simply titled Shooter.

Every now and then I like to watch a weekly video from Amoeba records called What’s in My Bag, when they bring in a musician or celebrity and let him show off his taste in music. Its a cool way to get opened up to some stuff you weren’t aware of. A lot of it is stuff I have no interest in, but this week’s episode featured one of my favorite actors, Ethan Hawke. Check it out here if you’re interested.

Shooter Jennings was among Hawke’s choices, so I figured I’d dig a little deeper. I didn’t really know that Waylon had a son that was a musician, because it seems that if you have parent that is a musician it often paves the way for you. So I was surprised that I had never heard of him before.

Shooter seems to have picked up where his dad left off dabbling in Outlaw Country and Southern Rock. Here’s a sample of some of the stuff I’ve listened to.

If you’re in the mood for some light old fashioned country then this is probably a good one to check out. I quickly learn that Shooter has been around for quite a while already and has about half a dozen albums out there so I hope to dig a little deeper into his work in the future.
