Aladdin is another of Disney’s new live action remakes of their animated classics. Snatch and Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie is directing the film and since Robin Williams is gone the famous Genie role had to be recast. In a what I consider a smart move they went in a whole new direction with it and cast Will Smith.
I’m pretty iffy on Will Smith these days. I feel like he’s a bit desperate to keep himself relevant at times, but I did sort of like this casting. We got out first look at Smith’s genie a few weeks ago with a Entertainment weekly cover.
So as you can see, the first photo showed Will Smith keeping more of a human form and that of course pissed off the internet because they want to keep the traditional blue look that the animated movie had. Well we got it and its worse. You can see the full trailer below.
So, the CGI is pretty bad, but the problem seems to be that the Genie has Will Smith’s face, when really they probably could’ve made a genie that was completely CGI and then just let Will Smith do the voice. That’s my opinion.
The look has been torched online. At first I wasn’t going to bother talking about it, but after this reaction I couldn’t help but talk about it. Here’s one of my personal favorite parodies circling the internet right now.
