Music biopics seem to be getting their second wind. Bohemian Rhaphsody nominated for several Oscars this year and we have an Elton John movie coming this year as well. One band biopic that has sort of been made under the radar is the Motley Crue biopic The Dirt that takes its name from the autobiography book from the band. The film seems to explore a lot of the wildness the band experienced during its heyday in the 1980s.
There doesn’t seem to be a lot of familiar people in the cast. Machine Gun Kelly (a rapper) is playing Tommy Lee, but I honestly don’t think I’ve seen anyone else in this trailer before. The movie is directed by someone who did like all the Jackass movies, which are admittedly a guilty pleasure for me, but they aren’t that good.
The film debuts on Netflix next month and I’ll definitely be giving it a try because I love music movies but I feel like this one could go either way based on the trailer. The dudes in Motley Crue are probably all dicks but at least they won’t shy away from all the partying they did during their peak. Plus, with them involved you get all the music too.
The band have retired from touring, but I think they’ve worked on some new music for the film’s release and at least one will feature Machine Gun Kelly as well.
