Favorite Tim Burton Movie?

Tim Burton has a new movie hitting theaters today. His live action remake of Dumbo has gotten fairly mixed reviews so far. The main word swirling around the film has been “unremarkable”. I don’t hate the ideas of all these live action remakes, but I was never that excited for another Dumbo, I hardly remember the original animated one.

Tim Burton used to be a massive filmmaker, but in my opinion its been a long time since he has done anything good. It seems like he has his own set of clichés now. He works with Disney a lot for some reason, even though the films are rarely any good. Johnny Depp is in almost anything he does. I was surprised to see that he wasn’t in Dumbo. In the last 20 years he’s made some remakes, that are mostly pretty bad (Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland). It just seems like his movies are quirky for the sake of quirkiness now, without any real point in it.

In the early 90s was when Burton’s movies seemed to be the best. He had a great run during that time. Personally I think my favorite Tim Burton movie is Ed Wood a biopic about the “worst filmmaker who ever lived” and its another collaboration with Johnny Depp. It was somewhat comedic and surprisingly inspirational. You could tell that James Franco took a lot of inspiration from it when making his movie about Tommy Wisseau with The Disaster Artist.

What is your favorite Tim Burton movie? Is he still a good director?
