25 Years Ago: Kurt Cobain Commits Suicide

Kurt Cobain of Nirvana took his own life on April 5th, 1994. 25 years ago. Cobain is still looked upon as one of the most influential musicians in all of music. Nirvana’s body of work was limited to just 3 albums because of Cobain’s death.

Cobain jumped the fence at a rehab facility in Los Angeles just a few days before he chose to end it. Then he flew back to Seattle and took his life on April 5th. He wasn’t found until 3 days later. He left a suicide note addressed to a childhood imaginary friend. His wife Courtney Love eventually did read the note during a public vigil.

Cobain found himself unexpectedly in the spotlight when Nirvana’s second album Nevermind had a surprisingly huge climb to the top of the charts. The album was when Seattle’s grunge movement found its way into the mainstream and wiped away almost all of the hair metal bands of the 1980s. The lead single Smells Like Teen Spirit still dominates radio today. Cobain never seemed to except his fame.

His death marked the end of Nirvana, although the other two surviving members found some other success with other projects.

Cobain is one of several high profile members of the 27 club, musicians who died at 27 years old. Other members included Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.

I’ve never been a huge Nirvana fan, but Cobain’s impact of music is immeasurable and his death is still a significant moment in pop culture.
