Are Fans Losing Confidence in Future Star Wars Creators?

I generally don’t like to post stuff like this, because its very speculation based (especially when I don’t watch Game of Thrones) but this is something that has suddenly become a bit of a concern for me as Star Wars fan. There’s enough negativity around Star Wars right now, so I don’t like to add to it. Still, its been something that has been on my mind for a few days.

I would say that the Star Wars fan base was universally excited when Rian Johnson and Beinoff and Weiss received their own Star Wars trilogies. Johnson quickly fell out of favor with fans that didn’t like The Last Jedi, but at the time it was announced everyone figured that the fact that Johnson got to build his own trilogy meant that fans were going to love his movie. Some did, some didn’t.

Then a few months later we got word that Game of Thrones writers Benioff and Weiss were going to get their own “series” of movies and once again, the reception was good. Game of Thrones is one of the most critically acclaimed shows of all time, not just currently and it seems like fans were always hoping for a “Game of Thrones style Star Wars movie or show” pretty much ever Disney bought it.

Game of Thrones is currently in the middle of its final season. Its currently got 2 episodes left and suddenly David Benioff and DB Weiss are starting to fall out of favor with Star Wars fans too. The first 4 episodes of this season haven’t been as beloved as season’s past and its gotten to the point where the show is no longer adapting George RR Martin’s books, they are going into a new direction, with Dan and Dave at the helm. So, this season was sort of a test run for some Star Wars fans to see how the pair would do with their beloved franchise, and this sample hasn’t exactly been a good one. It was also reported yesterday that Dan and Dave were rushing to finish the show while fans, and HBO were hoping to keep running it for a while longer (HBO is expected to lose a large amount of subscribers when the show ends).

There has been constant speculation that Rian Johnson’s movies aren’t even happening anymore, even with consistent reassurance from him that it is. Even recently when the 3 Star Wars movie dates were announced for 2022, 2024 and 2026 people were expecting it to be Benioff and Weiss’ trilogy and Johnson’s had been scrapped. Johnson is currently working on an original movie called Knives Out, a movie I personally am quite excited for and to be honest I’m more interested in Johnson’s trilogy than I am from the other guys. Just because I think he’ll be able to do something really cool if he’s able to build his own characters from the ground up.

Benioff and Weiss are more of a wildcard for me because I’ve seen so little from them and most of what they’ve done in their careers to this point has been adapting other people’s work. Maybe that is what Disney/Lucasfilm plans to do with them. Have them adapt Knights of the Old Republic, its what most fans want them to do anyway.

Even if you’ve liked the movies since the Disney purchase there is still lots to be worried about with Lucasfilm. There has been a lot of conflict with filmmakers, and Lucasfilm has been pretty notorious for making the wrong choice so far with their directors. That said, Rian Johnson seemed to have the best relationship with Kathleen Kennedy that anyone has had yet.

To try to end this article on a positive note I’ll say this. From what it looks like, we won’t be getting another Star Wars movie until 2022. So whoever ends up putting their movie out first has plenty of time to work on it and do it right. It appears that Lucasfilm isn’t trying to rush another Star Wars movie. I’m sure everyone is working on their repective trilogies as we speak. For as toxic as some fans have become I’m sure we all want these movies to be good, and there’s absolutely still a possibility that they’ll be the best Star Wars movies we’ve ever seen. Its just that the events of the past couple of years have made me a bit more unsure of Star Wars’ direction for the future.

Are you still confident in Rian Johnson and Benioff and Weiss?
