Ginger Baker, the drummer of the legendary blue rock band Cream has passed away at 80. Word broke a few days ago that Baker was having some health struggles and it looks like he has succumbed to them.
Baker is one of the more influential drummers of its era and was one of the first drummers to get more prominence in a rock band and get a chance to showcase their ability with solos like guitar players. A lot of the legendary drummers in 70s rock owe this man a dept.
Baker formed Cream with Eric Clapton and Jack Bruce. The group only survived for 3 years, but made a huge impact. Clapton is now the sole surviving member of the group as Jack Bruce passed away in 2014. Baker and Clapton also worked together in Blind Faith after Cream broke up in 1968.
Baker had lots of struggles with drugs over his lifetime. He claimed that he quit heroin 29 times over the course of his life. He also was known for a bad temper and he and Jack Bruce had a lot of conflict over the course of Cream’s short career.
