More castings have been released from Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Paul Dano (The Riddler), Zoe Kravitz (Catwoman), and Jeffrey Wright (Commissioner Gordon) have already joined Robert Pattinson’s Batman in the movie. The Wrap is now reporting that Andy Serkis is in talks to play Bruce Wayne’s butler and mentor Alfred Pennyworth and Colin Farrell is in talks to play the Penguin, one of Batman’s more popular villains.
Serkis is probably more known for his motion capture roles than he is for traditional performances, but when he does actually appear in movies he’s excellent. He was great in Black Panther. His mo-cap roles include Snoke in the Star Wars sequel trilogy and Caesar in the new rebooted Apes franchise. He’s also done some directing and is currently set to direct Sony’s sequel to Venom.
Alfred was most recently played by Jeremy Irons, and its a shame he didn’t get more time with the character because he was one of the DCEU’s stronger castings. Michael Caine is probably the definitive version of Alfred at this point from Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy.
Farrell will be the first actor to play the Penguin in a film since Danny Devito’s performance in Batman Returns. Farrell has played a comic book villain before back in Ben Affleck’s Daredevil movie when he played Bullseye. I like Farrell a lot as an actor, he tends to do great work, but casting him as the Penguin is a bit of an unorthodox casting. I’m up to see how he does.
It was rumored that this movie would feature a lot of the key members of Batman’s rogues gallery, and we’ve already got 2 villains and possibly more to come.
